The Feldenkrais® Method was developed by Russian born, engineer, physicist and martial artist Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) it is now recognised worldwide at the forefront of rehabilitation of injuries, neurological disorders and chronic pain, as well as a way to improve performance in sports and the arts. Feldenkrais enables us to rewire our movement patterns, overcoming habitual injuries, difficulties or limitations. The principles work with the brain's plasticity - it's innate ability to change itself, adapt, learn and re-learn throughout life and even after injuries and trauma.
Who is it for?
* People recovering from injury or illness.
* People suffering from pain, stress or anxiety.
* People who want to improve their quality of life, improve posture, and move with more freedom mobility and grace.
* Athletes, dancers, musicians and actors who want to improve and refine their skills.
* Children with developmental or learning disorders.
How is is taught?
Individual Sessions (known as Functional Integration or FI) using touch and gentle manipulation. Each session is tailored to your individual needs, to address specific issues or difficulties. FI is subtle, non-invasive, effective and widely recognised for its ability to address both minor aches and pains, and serious muscular-skeletal and neurological problems, chronic tension, and developmental problems in children.
Clients generally report feeling extremely relaxed during and after a session. You will feel more 'in your body', more grounded, and an ease in moving, sitting and standing. pain and tension is relieved, posture is more effortless, and thinking is clearer. Sessions last 1hr, the number of sessions will vary but I usually recommend a course of 3 - 5 sessions to begin with.
My background was in Professional Sport, as a tennis player and then a movement specialist, working with other professional and elite level junior players. I studied biomechanics and worked first on myself and then with other professionals analysing how their technique and the way they were moving was causing the usually repetitive injuries, and how they could learn to move more simply and change the habitual patterns to be able to recover and play again. This led me on to discovering the Feldenkrais Method- the study of how people move, and how habitual patterns can interfere with us doing the things that we want to do.
I realised the importance of listening to your body, and to your self from the inside, and the powerful learning possibilities that are then opened up. Feldenkrais offers a real possibility for change, and for learning, which I had not found before in other methods. It addresses the brain and nervous system, and so how people learn is a major part of the method. Because the brain is plastic, there is almost no end to how much a person can change and adapt, and I hope to help people have an insight into their own possibilities, when they begin to listen to their own bodies, and find a new equilibrium.
I graduated from a 4 year training in The Feldenkrais Method in Amsterdam, 2008. I am now undertaking an advanced training working with children with developmental problems. I am fully insured and a member of the UK Feldenkrais Guild.
