Perfume:
the perfect Christmas gift?
Well
the Christmas shopping season is upon us again and I have no doubt
that many of us will have a special someone we are buying for.
Maybe we want them to know how much we love them or maybe we can't
think what else to buy them, so we go for something "safe,"
something that "everyone wants," a nice new bottle of
perfume, aftershave or "eau de toilette."
But
did you ever stop to wonder what was in the bottle? Beyond the
glitzy advertising and the alluring name, just what is it that you
are spraying all over yourself and forcing the people around you
to breathe?
Perfumes
of today have never seen a flower. They are manufactured in
laboratories from petrochemicals and alcohols. Many of the
ingredients have never been tested for safety in humans although
most will have been animal tested (or animal tortured).

The
irony is that synthetic perfumes are a very poor imitation of the
real thing.
In
1998, researchers at the University of Middlesex compared the
brain activity of subjects smelling synthetic versions of food
compared with the odour of the real food. Only real food odours
produced any changes in brain activity. (Int
J Psychophysiol. 1998; 30(3):287-302)
The
point of smelling things is to change your brain activity. Smells
can evoke powerful memories and feelings, they can calm and relax,
or stimulate and heighten - but ONLY if they are natural smells,
not pale synthetic imitations.
So
here are our top tips for nice smells at Christmas
Avoid all synthetic
perfumes including perfume, aftershave, cologne, air fresheners,
deodorants, shampoos and cleaning chemicals.
Use essential oils as
perfumes - there are a wide range of scents available that can
have you smelling wonderful without creating asthma and lung
problems
Sprinkle essential oils
over the carpet or have them sitting in burners to fill the room
with healthy, invigorating smells
If body odour is a
problem, give up dairy products and only use a natural deodorant
Remember
that "clean" doesn't smell of anything (including "pine
glade" or "forest glen".)
Beat
the Hosepipe Ban
We've found a great way
to beat the hosepipe ban, cut the car-cleaning time in half and
reduce the pollution of our streams and oceans.
When you
use a shampoo to clean your car, all that detergent takes valuable
water and time to wash away and then it pollutes our drains,
eventually washing into the rivers and streams.
All you
need to wash your car is an Enjo garage glove and an outdoor
enjofil. This nifty mit means you can wash your car in half the
time with just half a bucket of water. A quick dry off with the
enjofil (or chamois) and you're done. The dirt rinses off in the
bucket leaving a chemical-free shine on your car. The glove lasts
for between 3 and 5 years, saving a fortune on sponges, cleaning
cloths, detergents and water.

Alternatives
to the FLU jab
Have you had your 'flu jab
this year? You'll know if you've had it because you'll have the
flu as well, any time soon. How can you get the 'flu from a 'flu
jab? Guess what? Maybe your delicate immune system doesn't
really want a dose of
I
don't know about you, but I think my immune system has enough to
cope with, without a nasty dose of all sorts of things I don't
know about.
Vaccines
are grown and strained through animal or human tissue like monkey
kidney tissue, chicken embryo, embryonic guinea pig cells, calf
serum, and human diploid cells (the dissected organs of aborted
human fetuses as in the case of rubella, hepatitis A, and
chickenpox vaccines).
But
aren't they tested? Well, yes and no. Tested on animals, yes -
another reason to avoid vaccinations; but animal testing is no
guarantee of effectiveness in humans. Testing on humans is not so
easy. Vaccines are supposed to be formulated against a specific
strain of influenza. It would take years to test a vaccination.
Most vaccinations are tested for 3 months maximum, so if you
suffer a reaction years (or generations) later, tough luck. If you
want to get your hands on the studies you're out of luck, these
are classified as commercial information and are not
published.
There is only one published randomised
controlled trial of vaccination in the over 60 age group(1). That
trial showed that for every 23 people, 2 unvaccinated people would
get the flu, whereas in the vaccinated group, one would get the
flu. So if you're over 60, your chance of avoiding the flu is 1 in
23.
This presumes you do nothing else to help yourself.
Fortunately there are many things you can do to prevent the flu:
Avoid dairy products
Avoid bad fats
Avoid
sugars
OK
these first three pretty much write off Christmas, but think about
the major 'flu season - January. Yes, Christmas is the major cause
of flu, not some imported virus.
Calcium
is a very important mobilizer of the immune system. With the
darkness closing in, most of us are extremely deficient in Vitamin
D and therefore our calcium levels drop giving us weakness,
fatigue, low immunity and osteoporosis.
If you
are still concerned about a specific illness, our resident
Homeopath, Dr Contractor would be pleased to advise on the best
way forward. You can email him on drconty@yahoo.com or telephone
on 07966628885. He has offered a free 15 minute chat to concerned
parents and has written a brief outline of the subject that you

Staying
Healthy at Christmas by Jane Eastoe
As
Christmas approaches, and we start the preparations for our
festivities, I'm sure most of us are aware of how taxing the whole
event is on our bodies. The excitement, stress and overload of
food and wine will take its toll. Here are a few supplements which
will boost your immune systems and help you through any excesses
of the season.
Super B Extra

Super
B Extra is a high-B multivitamin and mineral formula with 15mg
magnesium per tablet. It is particularly high in B6 and B12, so
making it excellent support for people who are physically tired.
It gives good levels of trace minerals and magnesium and high
levels of B vitamins. Excellent for acute needs in people who have
“overdone“ things and for maintenance in those people
who lead strenuous lives. Dosage 3 - 4 tablets daily.
Start
taking this in the weeks ahead, and you will find your stress
levels decrease, your energy increases, and you will sleep better.
Immunovite

Immunovite
contains Beta 1,3 1,6 Glucan a powerful immune-enhancing
nutritional supplement. This unique compound stimulates the innate
immune system to help the body defend itself against viral and
bacterial invaders. Download

Probiotic
Plus

Probiotic
Plus is designed to help balance the intestinal flora of both
adults and children. It contains 9 different probiotic strains
plus a small amount of the prebiotic FOS. The blend of
lactobacilli, lactococci, streptococci and bifidobacteria together
allows for the probiotic effects together to be exerted in both
the distal end of the small intestine and throughout the colon,
thus balancing the whole intestinal flora. Moreover, since the
probiotic effect is strain dependent, with each strain serving a
specific inhibition purpose, these 9 probiotic strains combined
act synergistically to combat intestinal infections and to
stimulate the body’s natural defenses.
Regular bowel
movements pass the toxins out of the body quicker, speeding up the
process of detoxification. Over eating sweet, rich foods and an
excess of alcohol depletes the friendly bacterial environment
within the large intestine, putting you at risk of the stomach
upsets and decreased immunity.
I recommend Cytoplan's food
state products, as they are just that, food state. This means they
are recognized by the body and utilized accordingly. Free from
artificial fillers and binders, wheat, sugars, starch, dairy,
corn, egg, soya, flavourings and preservatives.

Humour
Thank
goodness the English don't worry about whether inanimate objects
are male or female the way the French do. In case we ever do
decide to adopt the French model, here are a few suggestions
to make it easier to decide between "le" and
"la".
FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they
hold everything in, but you can see right through
them.
PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned
off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective
reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also
wreak havoc if you push the wrong buttons.
TYRES: Tyres are
male, because they go bald easily and are often over
inflated.
HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to
get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under
them
SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft,
squeezable and retain water.
WEB PAGES: Female, because
they're constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit
on.
TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the
same old lines for picking up people.
EGG TIMERS: Egg
timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the
bottom.
HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years,
they've hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have
around.
THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably
thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man
pleasure, he'd be lost without it and, while he doesn't always
know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying.
