News from Around The World
The results of
aspartame studies tend to depend on who paid for them. In an analysis
of 166 articles published in medical journals from 1980 to 1985, Dr.
Ralph G. Walton, a professor of psychiatry at Northeastern Ohio
Universities College of Medicine found that all 74 studies that were
financed by the industry attested to sweetener's safety.
Of the 92 independently funded articles, 84 identified adverse health effects. "Whenever you have studies that were not funded by the industry, some sort of problem is identified," said Dr. Walton, adding that he has not looked at studies performed since 1985. "It's far too much for it to be a coincidence."Dr. Walton, who, like some other psychiatrists, has studied aspartame from a neurological perspective, said he had also seen problems from the sweetener firsthand. At Safe Harbor Behavioral Health, a mental health facility in Erie, Pa., where he is clinical director, Dr. Walton said he had observed that for many people with mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder, aspartame exacerbates the condition. "For people with panic disorders, for instance, we've seen that when we eliminate aspartame, it's much easier to control their illness," he said. "The number of panic attacks goes down."
Studies Funded by Drug Companies Favour Drugs 80 Percent of the Time
Studies published in psychiatric journals are increasingly funded by drug companies, and the results of these studies often favor drugs. In 1992, only 25 percent of published studies were funded by drug companies, however, in 2002 this amount had risen to 57 percent.
Researchers from the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City examined four journals: American Journal of Psychiatry, Archives of General Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. They found drugs were favored in roughly:
Eight out of 10 studies funded by the company that makes the drug.
Five out of 10 studies not funded by industry.
Three out of 10 studies conducted by competitors of the drug's maker.
The researchers pointed out that, since increasing numbers of studies are funded by drug companies, journals may be reluctant to publish studies with negative or inconclusive findings.
Further, while a database was set up by the pharmaceutical industry in October 2004 to report study results, both negative and positive, posting negative study results is completely voluntary.

Sunblock Causes Cancer!
Dr. Gordon Ainsleigh in California believes that the use of sunscreens causes more cancer deaths than it prevents. He estimates that the 17% increase in breast cancer observed between 1991 and 1992 may be the result of the pervasive use of sunscreens over the past decade. Recent studies have also shown a higher rate of melanoma among men who regularly use sunscreens and a higher rate of basal cell carcinoma among women using sunscreens.
Dr. Ainsleigh estimates that 30,000 cancer deaths in the United States alone could be prevented each year if people would adopt a regimen of regular, moderate sun exposure.
Most chemical
sunscreens contain from 2 to 5% of benzophenone or its derivatives
(oxybenzone, benzophenone-3) as their active ingredient. Benzophenone
is one of the most powerful free radical generators known to man. It
is used in industrial processes to initiate chemical reactions and
promote cross-linking(15). Benzophenone is activated by ultraviolet
light. The absorbed energy breaks benzophenone's double bond to
produce two free radical sites. The free radicals desperately look
for a hydrogen atom to make them "feel whole again". They
may find this hydrogen atom among the other ingredients of the
sunscreen, but it is conceivable that they could also find it on the
surface of the skin and thereby initiate a chain reaction which could
ultimately lead to melanoma and other skin cancers. Researchers at
the Harvard Medical School have recently discovered that psoralen,
another ultraviolet light-activated free radical generator, is an
extremely efficient carcinogen. They found that the rate of squamous
cell carcinoma among patients with psoriasis, who had been repeatedly
treated with UVA light after a topical application of psoralen, was
83 times higher than among the general population.

Note

Many people now have a pathological
aversion to sunlight. As a result they suffer from a lack of Vitamin
D and consequently weak bones and arthritis. Vitamin D is also
protective against cancer.
Skin cancer rates have been
soaring in recent decades as the use of sunscreens increased. This
may not be coincidence. It is possible that the increased use of
sunscreens was the causative factor in the rise of skin cancer,
especially in countries like Britain where the rate of sun exposure
has remained fairly constant.
Please don't get burned, but
enjoy the sunshine. Expose your skin sensibly and cover up when it
gets too hot.
Patient
of the Month - Patricia Clayton
Congratulations
to Patricia Clayton for being our star patient of the month. For 12
months Patricia knew that life was catching up with her but she
didn't know what to do about it. She had severe back pain and daily
headaches. Her knees would suddenly just go from underneath her. She
had neck pains and knotted feelings in the base of her shoulders and
head. She was tired all the time, had bad concentration, aching
bones, night sweats, hot flushes and weight gain. She "just felt
old." The final straw was being told by her GP she needed to go
on thyroxin, which she had done but she still felt no
better.
Patricia was an ideal patient because she was
determined to get well and she followed her treatment plan to the
letter. Eight treatments over 2 months has totally transformed her
health and her life. If you ask her how she is now, she tells you she
feels energetic, has no cravings for sugar or bread, is less bloated,
more energetic, more optimistic, feels in control and good because
she knows what to do about her health. She lost 1 stone without
dieting and has had not one headache since starting treatment -
whereas she was having constant headaches every day.
Note
from Dr King
It's easy to feel as well as Patricia, all
you have to do is do what she did. She arrived for each appointment
with a real desire to find out what she could do to make herself
stronger. Once her weakness was identified she did whatever treatment
was necessary to eliminate that weakness, then she came back and
asked "what's next." The exact treatment she had is
irrelevant - well it's relevant to her but if you tried to follow it,
you wouldn't get the same results. We are all unique and we all have
certain needs that can best be identified with proprioceptive
testing. There just isn't one diet or one treatment that suits
everyone or benefits everyone. There is no substitute for accurate
testing and proven diagnosis.
Patricia's recovery has been
greatly assisted by the wonderful massage of Cristina Bustamante and
the personal training of Tonya Williams at Innergym.
I have to hold my hand up and admit that I've never been fully able to overcome my fondness of sweet foods. I manage my sweet tooth pretty well now by making sure I eat enough protein and natural fat, especially at breakfast because I know that if I do get hungry, I tend to grab whatever will pull up my blood sugar fastest. That may change now with this scary rundown on all the reasons sugar can ruin your health. Check out the full article here but here are just 20 ways sugar can ruin your health.
Sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease.1,2
Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in your body: causes chromium and copper deficiencies and interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium. 3,4,5,6

If you have too much sugar, consider
increasing your intake of Chromium and antioxidants
Phytox
PHYTOX
is a phyto-antioxidant nutrient in a vegetable capsule,
There
has been much recent research around the role in health of
phyto-nutrients such as the flavonoids, carotenoids and isoflavones.
All have been shown to play a very strong role in supporting the
defences of the body and to work in synergy with the other recognised
antioxidant vitamins and minerals. Antioxidants are an important
ingredient in the fight against inflammation and free radicals. We
all need good quantities of antioxidants but we need thes most if we
suffer from, or have a family history of hayfever, asthma, arthritis,
degenerative diseases, smoking or cancer.

Cytogold
is our Rolls-Royce Multivitamin and mineral supplement but at £20
for 4 months supply it costs just £5 per month or about 12 p
per day. It contains plenty of chromium to fight those sugar cravings
as well as generous quantities or just about every other vitamin and
mineral you could need. Uniquely, it is a FOOD STATE supplement which
means that all of the active ingredients have been fed to a yeast and
are therefore in plant form - just as they would be in nature. For
this reason, doses are much lower than in other supplements so there
is no danger of overdose, but what is in there gets absorbed easily
(but only if you need that nutrient).
