Staying Healthy

Mrs JT popped back for a checkup this week. I first saw her a year ago when she was 82 years old. She knew she was deteriorating fast as she now found it a struggle to walk the short distance to town. Naturally, everyone assumed she was just getting old.

Fortunately, function has nothing to do with age, shape, sex or religion and her examination soon revealed that she was as weak as a kitten and her muscles just weren't working properly. It didn't take long to track down her strength-zapper, the culprit was the glue she used to hold her dentures in place.

One year earlier she had changed to a new glue. What she didn't know was that her new glue contained propylene glycol (used in antifreeze and brake fluid) which she was now sucking on twelve hours a day.

I found her some less harmful glues and straightened out a few more faults and now she sprints into town. Actually she said "You know, every day I wake up and feel better and better." That's enough to make any chiropractor proud.

Now she is 83 years young and really going strong. She pops in for a checkup every 3 months to let me check whether anything else is holding her back from being as well as she ought to be.

New Wellness Programme

Deciding to have regular checkups is the best health insurance you can have. Although I often talk about coming up with a permanent solution to a problem, staying well needs occasional checkups. Just like your car needs maintenance, so does your body, in fact your body is probably more important than your car. Whereas you can replace a defective part in your car, you only get one shot at your body (unless you really want replacement hip joints - which are definitely not original equipment).

Naturality has decided to introduce a plan to make it easier for you to look after yourself once you're well. If you commit to having checkups regularly, we will give you a discount on your visits and give you free visits if something unexpected happens and you need a bit of reassurance or extra treatment.

Homeopathy

Dr Contractor writes:

"Homeopathy helps health and rejuvenation by giving remedies that support the patient's own healing mechanism. The homeopath uses minute amount of natural substances to help patients regain their energy, vitality and health. He considers each individual to be a unique person, having his/her own psychic and physical symptoms as well as his/her hereditary predispositions. It is therefore possible that the same problem or condition could have many different remedies, because each remedy is specific to the person, not the problem."

If you want to know exactly what to take for your condition, make an appointment to see Conty and see how much better you can feel. Tel 01442 800400

Testimonials

"I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis three and a half years ago after the birth of my child. My consultant prescribed a course of anti-inflammatory and steroid based tablets. Even the addition of steroid enemas had little effect. I also tried natural remedies that I had read about and eliminated certain foods from my diet. All to no avail.

I was at rock bottom when a friend recommended Naturality in June this year. On Simon's advice I went onto a wheat-free diet and had three amalgam fillings removed.

My initial skepticism evaporated when the effects of these changes began. Increased energy levels coupled with a reduction in bloating was a welcome relief from what I believed had become my body's normal state. And as for being able to pass normal stools... only a UC sufferer can tell you of the sheer joy I now feel that the bleeding has stopped and I am off all my medication."

Karen, Watford.

And one for Sean Heneghan - Acupuncturist.

"I would like to say how wonderfully helpful it has been for me to be treated by Sean Heneghan. I had never tried acupuncture before, though I was curious about it. After being bereaved, suffering sleep problems (sleep walking and talking, grinding my teeth), general anxiety and a feeling of being completely 'out of balance' I emailed Sean to see if he thought acupuncture might help me. After the first session, I felt almost immediately better and have had the best period of undisturbed sleep for months. I am continuing with the treatment and would encourage anyone with similar problems to try it. Sean is very caring and he takes time to explain the principles and reasoning behind the discipline. I am very impressed - and have recommended a work colleague and my partner to see him already."

Health News from What Doctors Don't Tell You (www.wddty.co.uk)

FLU JAB SEASON:  They don't work, of course, researchers discover

The over 65s among us will soon be exhorted to visit their local doctor for their seasonal flu jab.  And if they're as well read as our readers, they'll have ringing in their ears the World Health Organization (WHO) proclamation that flu vaccinations "reduce the risk of serious complications or of death by 70 to 85 per cent" in the elderly.

This very impressive statistic has doubtlessly informed public health strategy in the care of the elderly since it was highlighted by WHO in 2002.

The claim is based on one, dubious, study - and it turns out to be not true.  In fact, the flu vaccine is ineffective, as a review of all of the studies has discovered.

In one major study, 95 per cent of elderly people who were vaccinated developed pneumonia that year, and nearly one per cent died from the infection.  In a study of healthcare workers, another target group for annual vaccination, 39 per cent died from pneumonia, despite having the flu jab.

The vaccination's poor protection extends to younger people in the community.  In a study of adults below the age of 65, 67 per cent of those vaccinated still had influenza later in the season, and a similar total was registered in a group of children aged above six years.

So why do our health services spend millions in advertising and administering a vaccination that doesn't work?  Nobody is sure, but we guess everyone stopped reading once they had seen the WHO statement.

MMR:  Expect pressure to mount as measles cases rise

If you're a mother of a baby or toddler, expect serious pressure from your local doctor for your child to have the measles vaccination.  The word has gone out that there has been "a steep rise" in the cases of measles in the UK this year, which means that it is falling behind the World Health Organization target of elimination of the disease by 2010.

The alarm bells have been sounded because 449 cases have been reported in the year to last May, compared with 77 in the previous year.

The blame is laid squarely at the door of Dr Andrew Wakefield, whose study that suggested a possible link between the vaccine and autism scared off many thousands of parents.

Sadly, says the British Medical Journal, the medical establishment can't even hang out Wakefield's body as a warning to others who may dare suggest something's not safe in medicine.

The General Medical Council's misconduct charge against him is doomed.  The first charge, that he conducted flawed research, would bring down the whole medical house.  As the BMJ itself admits, most medical studies are flawed anyway.  And if, despite that, the GMC still finds him guilty, the anti-vaccine groups will make him a martyr.

In fact, the anti-vaccine groups have won the propaganda war.  The UK's health authorities were slow to appreciate the level of concern among parents, and were even slower to mount a credible defence.

Are we heading for compulsory vaccination anytime soon in the UK?  If they can take away our civil liberties without so much as a murmur, you betcha.
